Self-Optimization of Optical Confinement and Lasing Action in Disordered Photonic Crystals

چکیده
Light scattering is usually regarded detrimental to optical confinement in conventional lasers. In contrast, in random lasers, the confinement is caused by disorder-induced scattering. In strongly scattering media, the lasing is defined by the high-quality modes of the passive system. Thus, by incorporating and optimizing a degree of order, one can dramatically reduce the threshold of a random laser to the values comparable to those of photonic crystal (PhC) lasers. Unlike the latter, where the optical cavity has to be carefully designed and impeccably fabricated, in disordered systems the modes originate from the structure imperfections unintentionally introduced during the fabrication process. Lasing in a three-dimensional photonic crystal of the liquid crystal blue phase II.
Photonic-bandgap materials, with periodicity in one, two or three dimensions, offer control of spontaneous emission and photon localization. Low-threshold lasing has been demonstrated in two-dimensional photonic-bandgap materials, both with distributed feedback and defect modes. Liquid crystals with chiral constituents exhibit mesophases with modulated ground states. Helical cholesterics are on...
متن کاملLasing optical cavities based on macroscopic scattering elements
Two major elements are required in a laser device: light confinement and light amplification. Light confinement is obtained in optical cavities by employing a pair of mirrors or by periodic spatial modulation of the refractive index as in photonic crystals and Bragg gratings. In random lasers, randomly placed nanoparticles embedded in the active material provide distributed optical feedback for...
متن کاملLasing Dynamics of a Novel Silicon Photonic Crystal Cavity
In this paper we proposed novel silicon laser design based on the dispersion engineered photonic crystals. With the unique self-collimation property, we design an optical cavity with a Q factor of 2000. The strong mode confinement in the low index active material offers an opportunity to realize a lasing mechanism. To investigate the lasing dynamics we introduce the rate equations of atomic sys...
متن کاملSelf-optimization of optical confinement in an ultraviolet photonic crystal slab laser.
We studied numerically and experimentally the effects of structural disorder on the performance of ultraviolet photonic crystal slab lasers. Optical gain selectively amplifies the high-quality modes of the passive system. For these modes, the in-plane and out-of-plane leakage rates may be automatically balanced in the presence of disorder. The spontaneous optimization of in-plane and out-of-pla...
متن کاملFive-Fold Reduction of Lasing Threshold near the First ΓL-Pseudogap of ZnO Inverse Opals
We report room temperature lasing in ZnO inverse opal photonic crystals in the near-ultraviolet (UV) frequency. We observe random lasing due to disorder in the structures when the photonic pseudogaps are located away from the ZnO gain spectrum. Tuning the first ΓL-pseudogap to the gain peak leads to a five-fold reduction in lasing threshold and frequency shift of lasing modes due to the enhance...
